Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF)
The LULUCF sector includes removals and emissions from Agriculture Land, Forest Land, Grassland, Other Land (barren, unculturable, or wastelands), Settlements and Biomass burning in Forestland.
The LULUCF sector acted as a net sink throughout the reference period. On average, the land category in the LULUCF sequestered ~ 14.49 MtCO₂e annually. In 2023, the land category sequestered 57% of the total gross CO₂e emissions (excluding LULUCF) from the State.
Carbon sequestration was primarily driven by CO2 removals by Forest lands. The increase in forest cover declined to 0.26% between 2018 and 2019, compared to 1.99% during 2016 and 2017, resulting in reduced carbon sequestration. Further during 2020-2021, the forest cover increased by ~2% annually, resulting in a significant increase in carbon sequestration.
*In the year 2023, the following LULUCF categories were emitters: Biomass Burning in Forest Land, Grassland and Other Land (barren, unculturable, or wastelands). Their total emissions amounted to 0.0141 Million tonnes of CO₂e. Categories represented on the sunburst diagram, acted as sinks.
