Waste
The Waste sector was the second largest emitter in Kerala contributing 1.96 MtCO₂e in 2023 and accounting for ~8% of the Gross GHG emissions (excluding LULUCF) of the State.
Within the waste sector, Domestic Wastewater accounted for 94% of the emissions, followed by Industrial Wastewater at 4% and Municipal Solid Waste at 2%.
Emissions from solid waste disposal declined at a rate of 6.6% from 0.11 MtCO₂e in 2005 to 0.03 MtCO₂e in 2023, primarily due to significant improvements in the state's solid waste management.
Domestic Wastewater Emissions Trends - Rural and Urban
Emissions from Domestic Wastewater declined at a rate of 0.14 % from 1.68 MtCO₂e in 2005, to 1.65 MtCO₂e in 2021.
Almost 74% of Domestic Wastewater emissions were from the rural areas of Kerala in 2021, as seen in the figure.
Category-wise Share in Industrial Wastewater Emissions - 2023
The Fertilizer industry was the largest contributor to Industrial Wastewater emissions, accounting for ~45%, followed by the Pulp and Paper industry at ~27% and the Petroleum industry at about ~23%.
